2 StarsGreat art, realistic text exchanges between teens (!), awesome fashion, real issues (except the selkie girlfriend)。 I understand that the plot is juggling with a lot of subplots, and the main character with a lot of different issues—but there’s not really any redeemable qualities to Morgan。 She’s not a good friend, sister, or girlfriend, and there are no consequences to this。 Her girlfriend also nearly murders an entire boat of people, with no consequences。

What a sweet wonderful book。Morgan considers herself an average girl, in an in-crowd at high school, dealing with her parent's divorce and little brother's onset dickery, when she's saved from drowning by a mysterious girl, or a REALLY cute near-death hallucination。Keltie turns out to be a selkie, however, bonded to Morgan by true love's kiss。 This gets in the way of Morgan hiding being gay until she's moved out of their small town to a city college。 The summer becomes a balancing act of her rel What a sweet wonderful book。Morgan considers herself an average girl, in an in-crowd at high school, dealing with her parent's divorce and little brother's onset dickery, when she's saved from drowning by a mysterious girl, or a REALLY cute near-death hallucination。Keltie turns out to be a selkie, however, bonded to Morgan by true love's kiss。 This gets in the way of Morgan hiding being gay until she's moved out of their small town to a city college。 The summer becomes a balancing act of her relationship with Keltie, being both gay and unintentionally eternally wedded to a mythical creature, and hiding both of these facts from her friends and family。 But Keltie may be hiding things of her own。I really enjoyed how there was just like no homophobia in this。 Please more of that。 。。。more

cw: on page outingI expected nothing less from the person who gave the world The Witch Boy。 The art is stunning, the colors are vibrant, and the story is wholesome and sweet and yet still deals with hard topics like dealing with the aftermath of divorce, coming out, first love, and balancing personal life with close friends。 And honestly, I didn't know I needed sapphic selkie stories until I read this。 cw: on page outingI expected nothing less from the person who gave the world The Witch Boy。 The art is stunning, the colors are vibrant, and the story is wholesome and sweet and yet still deals with hard topics like dealing with the aftermath of divorce, coming out, first love, and balancing personal life with close friends。 And honestly, I didn't know I needed sapphic selkie stories until I read this。 。。。more

This was pretty adorable。 Right off the bat, I appreciated the author having the character icons on the front page, and going forward they are wearing the color of their icon so you know who is who。 They all look completely different (I loved loved the art in this book), but it's still nice, for someone who doesn't read a lot of graphics or do well with them, to have that。 The story is very sweet, very clean, and appropriate for MS and HS。 I found the mom hilarious - so supportive, and she tries This was pretty adorable。 Right off the bat, I appreciated the author having the character icons on the front page, and going forward they are wearing the color of their icon so you know who is who。 They all look completely different (I loved loved the art in this book), but it's still nice, for someone who doesn't read a lot of graphics or do well with them, to have that。 The story is very sweet, very clean, and appropriate for MS and HS。 I found the mom hilarious - so supportive, and she tries so hard。 Definitely recommend this one。 。。。more

Happy Pride Month! This book is so unbelievably delightful and I’ll be rereading it a dozen times just to feel all the feelings。 A queer, coming-of-age romance featuring a selkie and a plot surrounding friendship dynamics and environmental activism? What is not to love!? The Girl from the Sea is the latest from Molly Knox Ostertag, author and illustrator of The Witch Boy series, and this single volume graphic novel is another stunning beauty of art and storytelling。 When Morgan kisses a mysterious girl who saves her from drowning, the girl reveals herself to be a selkie granted power to walk on land from their kiss。 But this awkward girl is embarrassing to have around her “cool” friends, mostly because Morgan is fearful of coming out。 Ostertag manages to keep the story feeling fresh as she examines the volatile emotions of balancing friendships with romances and not letting the opinions of others get in the way of what the heart wants。 One aspect that works particularly well is the way group texts figure prominently in the novel, showing the friend-group dynamic and Morgan’s notable absence。 Juxtaposing the digital conversations with Morgan’s dates with Keltie the selkie is effective and anyone who has ever felt guilty for ignoring texts while trying to enjoy time away will certainly vibe with these scenes。After reading a couple series, it was refreshing to visit a single volume story。 The plot is paced quite well and while it is a bit of a low stakes narrative compared to her other works it still provides just as much of an emotional impact。 Plus the whole “the rich family is ruining the local environment” is kind of a great staple of young adult narratives that urges readers to look at human impact on the wider world。 I wish books like this existed when I was young and I will endlessly support and read them now so my inner confused child can enjoy this quality LGBT content they needed。The adorable and tumultuous love story really sings and the harmonizations of everyday life with friends and family all orchestrate together for a simply stunning book。 Dealing with divorce, public opinion and trying to plan for her life all adds nuance and gripping textures to the overall story and are sure to connect with a wide audience。 The family dynamics are sure to pull the heartstrings and it’s always lovely to see a coming out scene where the parent is supportive (Take note, parents, being supportive is literally life saving)。 I loved The Girl from the Sea with it’s beautiful art and story, and I hope you will too。4。5/5 。。。more

4。5- A delightful and magical story that made my queer heart soar。There were definitely some plot points that I didn’t particularly agree with (some characters definitely needed to be taught more of a lesson than they were in my personal opinion) but I trust that they aided the story in the right way。 Plus I was too in awe of the incredible storytelling and artwork to be too hung up on my anger。 I’m not quite sure how to word my positive thoughts about this book other than it’s made me feel insp 4。5- A delightful and magical story that made my queer heart soar。There were definitely some plot points that I didn’t particularly agree with (some characters definitely needed to be taught more of a lesson than they were in my personal opinion) but I trust that they aided the story in the right way。 Plus I was too in awe of the incredible storytelling and artwork to be too hung up on my anger。 I’m not quite sure how to word my positive thoughts about this book other than it’s made me feel inspired in my own graphic novel work, grateful for the creation of this story so that young people everywhere will be able to experience this fairytale-esc story about two girls who love each other, and anticipatory for more projects by this amazing author。 The world needs more stories like this one。 。。。more

Molly Knox Ostertag has done it again。 The Girl from the Sea is an adorable, sapphic twist to the selkie folk tale。 Fifteen-year-old Morgan has a plan: finish high school and get as far away as possible so that she can come out and not feel like she is putting more burden on her family。 It's a good plan until Keltie, a mysterious girl from the sea, saves Mogan's life。 Now Morgan must balance wanting to keep her secret and wanting Keltie her in life。 I loved this story。 As with all of Ostertag's Molly Knox Ostertag has done it again。 The Girl from the Sea is an adorable, sapphic twist to the selkie folk tale。 Fifteen-year-old Morgan has a plan: finish high school and get as far away as possible so that she can come out and not feel like she is putting more burden on her family。 It's a good plan until Keltie, a mysterious girl from the sea, saves Mogan's life。 Now Morgan must balance wanting to keep her secret and wanting Keltie her in life。 I loved this story。 As with all of Ostertag's books, the illustrations are gorgeous, and the story gripping。 Add in that's is a selkie tale, and what's not to love。 。。。more

Representation: poc lesbian mc, f/f/sapphic romance, fat sapphic li。 Content warnings: Near-death experiences, closted, secret relationship, outing。 A cute selkie YA romance!Morgan Kwon lives in a small town, surrounded by an island。 She can’t wait to leave, so she can be gay and embrace all parts of herself。 This is the plan, but when she meets Keltie, a selkie (love the play on that) with a bubbly and carefree personality, those plans quickly change。 I’m realizing a pattern when I read and I t Representation: poc lesbian mc, f/f/sapphic romance, fat sapphic li。 Content warnings: Near-death experiences, closted, secret relationship, outing。 A cute selkie YA romance!Morgan Kwon lives in a small town, surrounded by an island。 She can’t wait to leave, so she can be gay and embrace all parts of herself。 This is the plan, but when she meets Keltie, a selkie (love the play on that) with a bubbly and carefree personality, those plans quickly change。 I’m realizing a pattern when I read and I think I’ve been spoiled with all the wonderful stories where queer kids are allowed to be their most authentic and unapologetic self。 They don’t hide who they are and don’t try to hide the person they like。 And so, I was frustrated coming to this。 I understand for plot reasons why the story went this way, but I felt like the treatment of certain characters could have been orchestrated more carefully。 There is definitely shame still attached to queerness and not everyone is ready to accept their queerness, especially because there is violence toward those who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community。 But I think there is a difference between hiding someone because you are afraid you will be harmed and then hiding someone because you are embarrassed by them and not just outing you as queer, but as someone different and “weird,” outside the norm。 I also wonder what this text might be saying about first love, and how sometimes, we become so entangled in a relationship that we forget our friends and family。 And maybe not just because we can be our complete selves, but because it's easier and less messy to keep a relationship a secret。 That relationship becomes centered and that person becomes yours and you don’t want to share them with anyone else。 And while an outing of a character is never careful, I didn’t expect it to happen that way。 But I can see why it did。 I’m curious to read what other people thought about that。 That said, I did find this story incredibly adorable, but I think that’s mostly because I love fantasy realism and all things water。 Keltie is very cute and I can't wait to see her in full color! And I always find the unashamed magical character amusing。 “I like to keep my life tucked neatly into boxes…” I definitely feel like this book is saying a lot about what are the things about ourselves that we keep hidden, in “boxes” that make us the kind of person we are, which can often be destructive, impulsive, or distant when we ignore those parts。 And how can we let go if things do not turn out the way we want them to, even though it’s painful。 And ultimately, how can we accept ourselves without depending on another person to do that work for us。I appreciate being able to read the ARC of this work, and while not everything in this book worked for me, I hope that readers really enjoy this! 。。。more
